Question

The figure above shows four very thin parallel planes of charge with equal separation between them. The charge density on plate 1 is -2 ?. The charge density on plate 2 is 3 ?. The charge density on plate 3 is -5 ?. The charge density on plate 4 is 1 ?. Your answers for the electric field must include the correct sign. We choose positive electric field along the positive x-direction.

What is the Electric Field at point E? (in units of ?/?0)

I really don't understand when the values should be divided by -2 or just 2, can you also explain that?

1 2 3 4 The figure above shows four very thin parallel planes of charge with equal separation between them. The charge density on plate 1 is-2 The charge density on plate 2 is 3 . The charge density on plate 3 is-5 . The charge density on plate 4 is 1 . Your answers for the electric field must include the correct sign. We choose positive electric field along the positive x-direction.

Explanation / Answer

electirc field due to each plane is E = /20

is the surface charge density

0 is the permittivity of free space

due to plane1 is E1 = -2/20

due to plane2 is E2 = 3/20

due to plane3 is E3 = -5/20

due to plane4 is E4 = /20

then Electric field at point E is E = E1+E2+E3+E4

E = ( -2/20)+(3/20)-(5/20)+(/20) = -1.5(/0)

E = 1.5(/0) towards plane 4
