Question
A physics book slides off a horizontal table top with a speed of 1.30 m/s. It strikes the floor in 0.700 s. Ignore air resistance. (Assume the book's horizontal direction and upward are positive.
(b) Find the horizontal distance from the edge of the table to the point where the book strikes the floor.
(c) Find the horizontal and vertical components of the book's velocity just before it reaches the floor.
m/s (horizontal component)?
m/s (vertical component)?
Find the magnitude and direction of the book's velocity just before it reaches the floor.
m/s ?
° (below the horizontal) ?
Explanation / Answer
by using the equation of linear motion we have
x = Ux*t+0.5ax*t^2
but acceleration in x- direction is zero
x = 1.3*0.7 = 0.91m
horizontal distance from the edge of the table to the point where the book strikes the floor = 0.91m
b) horizontal component
Vx = Ux + ax*t (but ax = 0)
Vx = Ux = 1.3 m/s
Vy = Uy - gt
Vy = 0 - 9.8*0.7
Vy = -6.86 m/s
c) magnitude of books velocity = sqrt(1.3^2 + 6.86^2) = 6.982m/s
at angle tan^-1(6.86/1.3) = 79.27 below the horizontal
