Question

Two carts are riding on an air track as shown in the figure below. At clock time t = 0 cart B is at the origin traveling in the +x direction with a speed vB0. At that time, cart A is at the position shown and is at rest. Cart B has twice the mass of cart A. The carts "bump" each other, but don't stick.

In the graphs below are shown a number of possible plots for the various physical parameters associated with the two carts. Each graph has two curves, one for each cart and labeled with the cart's letter. For each property

(a)-(e) select the letter of the graph that could be a plot of the property.

(a) The forces exerted by the carts  ---Select--- 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

(b) The acceleration of the carts  ---Select--- 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

**** NOTE: a) 4 Is NOT the Right Answer. b) 4 and 6 Are NOT the right answer. ****

Before initially at rest cart A cart B

Explanation / Answer

(a) When cart will collide they will exert equal and opposite force on each other

As cart B was moving to the left so force on B will be towards right so positive

and force on A will be negative

Force will start increasing and decreasing exactly same for both

So option #5 is correct for force

(b) Graph would remain same for acceleration also just the area under the graph for A would be double because its mass is half

so graph is similar as #5 but lower area will be just twice than upper area

Please check if it is given in #9
