Question

Two carts are riding on an air track as shown in the figure below. At clock time t = 0 cart B is at the origin traveling in the +x direction with a speed vB0. At that time, cart A is at the position shown and is at rest. Cart B has twice the mass of cart A. The carts "bump" each other, but don't stick.

In the graphs below are shown a number of possible plots for the various physical parameters associated with the two carts. Each graph has two curves, one for each cart and labeled with the cart's letter. For each property

(a)-(e) select the letter of the graph that could be a plot of the property.

(a) The forces exerted by the carts  ---Select--- 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

(b) The acceleration of the carts  ---Select--- 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

**** NOTE: a) 4 Is NOT the Right Answer. b) 4 and 6 Are NOT the right answer. ****

Before initially at rest cart A cart B

Explanation / Answer

(a)

Graph for Force exerted by carts-

Both the carts will exerts force only during collision.

So, graph must begin from 0 and ends in given time.

Force exerted by cart B is positive and negetive by cart A.

This condition is only fulfillled in graph 5.

(b)

lnitial acceleration of both the carts is 0.

( cart A is at rest and B is traveling at constant velocity).

During bumping, cart A will accelerate (+ a) and B will decelerate (- a).

After collision, cart A and B move with constant velocity so,final acceleration of both the carts will also be 0.

This condition is only fulfilled in graph 4.
