Question

7) A large storage tank, open at the top and filled with water, develops a small hole in its side at a point 16.0 m below the water level. The rate of flow from the leak is found to be 2.50 x 10-3 m3/min. Determine (a) the speed at which the water leaves the hole and (b) the diameter of the hole. Ans: 17.7 m/s, 1.73 mm

Explanation / Answer

a)speed v = (2gh)

v= (2gh)

=2*9.8*16

=17.7m/sec

b)V = 2.50*10^-3 m^3/min = 2.50*10^-3/60

=0.0416*10^-3

V = A*v

0.0416*10^-3 =3.14*r^2*17.7

r=8.65*10^-4m

d=2r=1.73 *10^-3 m

=1.73mm
