Question

Have a Geophysics question

If the normal crustal thickness on a certain continent is 35km, and a 3km high mountain range occurs in the middle of it what is the total thickness of the crust in the middle of the mountain range, if the topography is held up by Airy compensation? The total crustal thickness at the locationof the mountain range is the sum of the height of the mountains the normal crustal thickness, and the extra crustal thickness due to Airy compensation.

1) Calculate the total crustal thickness at the location of the mountain range (crustal density of 2.8 gm/cm^3 and mantle density of 3.1 gm/cm^3

2)Draw the cross section model with accurate relative scaling showing the normal crust on either side of the mountain range, the mountain range witht hte thickened crust, and the mantle.

3)Label each element of the cross section and label their thicknesses.
