A galvanometer is an ammeter that gives the direction of a current, as well as the amount of the current. A large solenoid is connected to a galvanometer, as in the figure below. By passing a current through the solenoid, it is determined that a clockwise current view from above will deflect the needle to the right while a counter - clockwise current will deflect the needle to the left. All batteries are then disconnected from the solenoid, and a bar magnet is brought down the outside of the solenoid As this occurs. the needle on the galvanometer deflects to the right. Use this information to label he poles of the magnet Explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

The direction of current in the solenoid is due to the change in magnetic flux which is linked due to the motion of the magnet. The direction is in accordance with Lenz's law which says that the direction of current is such that it always opposes the cause that produces it.

Since the deflection in the galvanometer is to the right the direction of current in the solenoid is clockwise or the solenoid act as magnet with north pole ,therefore the polarity of the magnet will be such that the north pole facing the solenoid is brought near the solenoid, because then only the magnet will be repelled.

So the north pole will be towards the solenoid and the south pole away from it.
