Question

If a solar cell absorbs photons whose energies are greater than the bandgap, the electron is simply excited to a level in the conduction band above the bottom of the band. When the electron deexcites back to the bottom of the band, heat is generated. Can you think of one more (simpler) reason why a solar cell might heal up? Create and solve a physics problem based on one of your scavenger hunts. The problem should involve math and be at least on par with the average difficulty level of problems in this course. A diverging lens can only form a virtual image. In a very simplified way, the retina of our eye acts as a screen, and we know an image appears on a screen only if the image is real. So how is it possible for us to see a virtual image?

Explanation / Answer

23) Sunlight or light in general is an electromagnetic wave, which heats up its surrounding medium and the medium it is incident on by virtue of radiation. Thus apart from electron receiving energy and heating the solar panel after being de-excited, the solar panel is primarily being heated by the direct radiation from sunlight.

24) I believe this question is related to class work, so unless something is told about the scavenger hunt, i would be unable to answer this question.

25) Yes true, a diverging lens produces virtual image, and by definition of optics virtual images cannot be obtained on screen. Then how come we can see it? Well the answer is pretty simple, our eye also has a lens, which is unique as it can modify and adapt to our need, but in general it acts as a converging lens and refocus' any incident light incident on our eyes to the retina. Hence the rays obtained from a diverging lens are refocused in our eye to form a real image on the retina.
