Question
In an experiment to measure the speed of light using the apparatus of Armand H. L. Fizeau (see figure below), the distance between light source and mirror was 11.40 km and the wheel had 720 notches. The experimentally determined value of c was 2.995 108 m/s when the outgoing light passed through one notch and then returned through the next notch. Calculate the minimum angular speed of the wheel for this experiment. (Enter your answer to four significant figures.)
answer in rad/s please
Toothed wheel MirrorExplanation / Answer
Degree movement of wheel in consecutive notches :
360 /720 = 0.5 degrees
The wheel has to move 0.5 degrees in the time light goes and travel back.
Time taken : 2 x 11.40 x 1000 / 2.995 x 10^8
= 7.61 x 10-5 s
of wheel = 0.5 x 0.0174 /7.61 x 10-5
= 114.32 rad/s
1 degree = 0.0174 radiansRelated Questions
