The particles emitted in nuclear radiation generally have high enough energy that thier wavelength is small enough to interact with molecules, atoms, and even nuclei. Biological systems cannot handle exposure to nuclear radiation well since such radiation generally destroys finely-tuned bonding required for most biomolecular mechanisms.

This leads us to the following question: Why do we use radiotherapy to fight malignant tumors and cancer in general? Why do we use nuclear radiation to destroy biological components that are also caused by radiation (and other factors)? Briefly explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

As already, given in the question, the wavelength of emmited radiation is small enough to interact with human tissues and cells. This interaction generally destroy the interacted micro entity (i.e. tissues) and kill them. This dead tissue will not grow further and hence such radiation can be used as curing agent.
