Question
At an air show, a jet plane has velocity components vx = 655 km/h and vy = 505 km/h at time 4.80 s and vx = 873 km/h and vy = 380 km/h at time 6.77 s .
a-For this time interval, find the x component of the plane's average acceleration (answer has to be in km/h^2). b-For this time interval, find the y component of the plane's average acceleration. (answer has to be in km/h^2)c-For this time interval, find the magnitude of its average acceleration.(answer has to be in km/h^2) d-For this time interval, find the direction of its average acceleration.
Explanation / Answer
average acceleration = (Vf - Vi ) / t
A), x - component of average acceleration is
ax = ( 873 - 655 )/ 6.77-4.80. = 218 / 1.97 = 110.6km/h^2.
B) y component of average acceleration is
ay = ( 380 - 505)/6.77 - 4.80 = 125 / 1.97 = 63.5 km /h ^2.
C) average acceleration for this time interval
a = ax ^2 + ay ^2. = (110.6)^2 + (63.5)^2 = 127.5km/h^2
D) direction of average acceacceleration is given by,
tan(alpha) = ay / ax = 63.5 / 110.6 = 0.5741
hence, alpha = 29.87 = 30°.
