James is a 18 year old male. Yesterday he began complaining of an upset stomach and diffuse abdominal pain. He thinks he ate something weird at lunch today which is making him ill. Today he comes to you with the same symptoms; in addition he is complaining of RLQ pain which is relieved with hip flexion.
1)What condition do you suspect?
2)How would you test for the condition?
3)Your plan is to refer John to the Emergency Department at the local hospital. Explain to John what to expect in the Emergency Department.
Explanation / Answer
1) The condition suspected in this case is appendicitis. The primary symptoms which include pain in the right lower abdomen , stomach upset and diffused pain in the abdomen.
2) physical examination shows tenderness in the RLQ region, elevated temperatures, followed by clinical tests. Clinical tests include tests for blood where WBC count (Leukocytes >_ 10,000), neutrophils count greater than 75 percent , C-reactive proteins test followed by an ultra sonography for final diagnosis. If in case there is some anomaly in ultrasonography , computed tomography is used . CT is not used as the first radiation detection because of the risks associated with CT.
3) john would be subjected to ultra sonography to detect the presence of an appendicitis.
