Question

What are the units of the slope of your F vs. upsilon^2 plot? The lines that you draw through the data on your F vs. upsilon^2 plot should pass through the origin. Give a simple reason for this. A marble rolls along the inside of a semicircular track made of copper tubing that is lying on a level table that is parallel to the floor (Fig. 5.6). As the marble leaves the track at point 0, does it follow path A, path B, or path C? Explain your answer in terms of the concepts developed in this experiment.

Explanation / Answer

The questions (1) and (2) are related to the above (hidden) theories.

Only question (3) can be separately answered, so I am solving this problem.

The marble will follow the path shown by A.

Explanation:

For the marble rotating in a circular path, centrifugal force Fc will come in force.

where, Fc = m*v2 / r

where, v = velocity of the marble and r = radius of the circular path.

The direction of this force is out-side towards the center of the path.

The other force, frictional force Ff will act in the opposite to the direction of motion of the marble.

Now the resulatant force acting on the marble -

F = Fc + Ff

And the direction of this resultant force shall be the path shown as A.
