intially the protons were at rest ( only potential energy) , and when they are at 4d distance they have potential and kinetic energy.

now potential energy is given by (K*q*q)/r

where K is coulomb constant, q is the charge of proton , r is the distance

kinetic energy will be 0.5mv2

Where m is the mass of proton , v is the velcotiy of proton

hence the equatio becomes,

k*q2/d= (k*q2)/4d + 2*( 0.5mv2)

=> (3kq2)/(4d)=mv2

=> v = sqrt [(3kq2)/(4md)]
