Question
Which answer is correct and why?
A glass is initially filled with 155 cm3 water plus 85 cm3 of ice so that the water level is exactly at the rim of the glass, with some of the ice sticking out above the rim. After all of the ice has melted and turned into water,
A. the water level in the glass has decreased in such a way that you can add another 85 cm3 of water without the glass overflowing.
B. the water level in the glass has decreased in such a way that you can add another 12 cm3 of water without the glass overflowing.
C. the water level will remain at exactly the same level, and no water will flow over.
D. a total of 12 cm3 of the water will overflow.
E. a total of 85 cm3 of the water will overflow.
Explanation / Answer
Solution:
Option-C
The water level will remain at exactly the same level(rim of the glass), and no water will flow over.
Reason:
When the ice melts it just going to be equal to the displaced water(Archimedies principle).
Hence, filling the space that is there & no more increasing or decreasing takes place!
