Question
In order to answer these questions you would need to have performed the decarboxylase test. Phenylalanine medium sometimes is prepared in broth form with a pH indicator similar to that used in decarboxylase medium so that increases in pH then can he detected by development of purple color. When testing an organism for the ability to deaminate phenylalanine, would you expect to overlay this medium with mineral oil? Why or why not? If you ran such a test, how would you know that an increase in pH was due to deamination and not to decarboxylation?Explanation / Answer
mineral oil used as create an anaerobic environment for certain biochemical tests like decarboxylase test ans oxidation, fermentation reactions. because these tests relay on the organisms ability to metabolize the substrates in the test medium under anaerobic conditions. so mineral oil is important.
bromocresol purple act as color indicator when pH changes in decarboxylase test. in this test when pH is alkaline bromocresol turns into purple, turns into yellow in the acidic pH. but when it is added to phenylalanine medium this could give green color change when phenylalanine gets deamination.
