Question

A drawing of the Bohr model of electron orbits in the hydrogen atom is shown (1 eV = 1.60 times 10^19 J). 1) Which of the following will cause an electron transition from n = 1 to n = 2? A photon with energy E_photon = 13.6 eV A photon with energy E_photon = 3.4 eV Two photon, each with energy E_photon = 5.1 eV Any photon with energy E_photon = 10.2 eV A photon with energy E_photon = 11 eV None of the above 2) Briefly explain your answer to the previous question. 3) Which of the following transitions will enter a photon with a longest wavelength?

Explanation / Answer

1) option (d)

photon of energy 11 eV can cause this transition

2) electron transition from n=1 to n=2

E12 = E2 - E1 = -3.4 - (-13.6) = 10.2 eV energy photon

now electron transition from n=1 to n=3

=> E13 = E3 - E1 = -1.51 - (-13.6) = 12.09 eV energy photon

=> electron with energy 10.2 eV < E < 12.09 eV can only cause n=1 to n2 transition.
