Question
The diagram shows what happens to a system undergoing an adiabatic process.
Which labels best complete the diagram?
a. X: Work is done by the system and temperature decreases.
Y: Work is done to the system and temperature increases.
b. X: Work is done to the system and temperature increases.
Y: Work is done by the system and temperature decreases.
c. X: Work is done by the system and temperature increases.
Y: Work is done to the system and temperature decreases.
d. X: Work is done to the system and temperature decreases.
Y: Work is done by the system and temperature increases.
Explanation / Answer
In an adiabatic process, heat exchange between system and surrounding is zero.
hence first law of thermodynamics, becomes
0 = delta U + W
W = - delta U
When there is increase in volume of system, work is done by system or W is +ve,
With decrease in volume work is done to the system or W is -ve
Hence In case of X, work is done by the system and in Y work is done to the system.
When W is +ve ( done by the system), delta U is -ve hence , there is decrease in tempreture ( internal energy is propotional to tempreture)
When W is -ve ( done to the system), delta U becomes +ve and there is increase in tempreture.
Hence option a is correct
