Question
Level the two masses again. Once they are level, gently tap on the mass on the right. This effectively adds an additional downward force on that mass just for an instant. What happens to the system when you tap on one of the masses? Why doesn’t the mass you tapped on continue to fall after you stop touching it?
This question has to do with an Atwood Machine. I am having problems with the second question. I think the weight would stop going down because the opposing gravitational force of the other weight would be enough to stop this temporary unbalanced force but am not sure?
Explanation / Answer
it is due to the inertia of motion possessed by the other block on the opposite side of the atwood machine. there is no stopping force on the Other block, so it will keep moving as it has inertia of motion.
