Carbapenem is a broad spectrum antibiotic and is prescribed when none of the antibiotic treatment is able to stop the infection that is why carbapenems are also called as drug of last resort or drug of last choice. carbapenems are usually prescribed to patients infected with ESBL(extended spectrum of beta lactamase) pathogens which shows resistance to most of beta lactam drugs(penicillin family). if the GPC(gram postive cocci) shows resistance to penicillin family drug, carbapenem will be prescribed.
