Question

An aluminum cup contains 225g of water and a 40g copper stirrer all at 27 degrees C. A 417 g sample of silver at an initial temperature of 86 degrees C is placed in the water. The stirrer is used to stir the mixture gently until it reaches its final equilibrium temperature of 32 degrees C. Calculate the mass of the aluminum cup. In grams. Explanation / Answer

specificic heat capacity of silver=0.24 J/g*C

0.9, 0.381, and 4.18 are sp. heat cap. of Al, Cu, and H2O respectively in the unit of J/g 0 C

heat given by the silver = ms (delta T) =417*0.24* 54 =5404.32 J

heat taken by aluminium , copper and water= Ma *0.9*5 +40*0.381*5 +225*4.18*5 because delta T=32-27=5

Ma*4.5+76.2+4702.5=4778.7+ma*4.5

since heat given = heat taken

5404.32=4778.7+ma*4.5

625.62 =ma*4.5

ma =(625.62/4.5)=139.03 g   here ma is the mass of aluminium
