Question
Chapter 19, Problem 24 Your answer is partially correct. Try again. Two identical point charges (q = +7.90 x 10-6 C) are fixed at opposite corners of a square whose sides have a length of 0.630 m. A test charge (90 =-9.60 x 10-8 C), with a mass of 6.90 x 10-8 kg, is released from rest at one of the corners of the square. Determine the speed of the test charge when it reaches the center of the square. the tolerance is +/-296 Click if you would like to show work for this question: Open Show work LINK TO TEXTExplanation / Answer
Use conservation of energy where (K + U)1 = (K + U)2 K = kinetic energy = 1/2*m*v^2
and U is potential energy = V*q where V is the potential
Initially K1 = 0 so we need the V at points 1 and 2 (Recall V = k*q/r)
So V1 = (2 x 9 x 10^9 x 7.90 x 10^-6) / 0.630 m = 225714 V
V2 = (2 x 9 x 10^9 x 7.90 x 10^-6) / (sqrt(2) x 0.315) = 319208 V
Now we have K2 = 1/2*m*v^2 = U1 - U2 = -9.60 x 10^-8 x (2.257 x 10^5 - 3.192 x 10^5) = 8.976 x 10^-3
so v = sqrt(2*U/m) = sqrt[(2 x 8.976 x 10^-3) / (6.90 x 10^-8) ]
v = 510 m/s
