Question
uestion 1 of 16 Sapling Learning simultaneously on a stubborn donkey. Jack pulls eastward with a force of 66.7 N, Jill ulls with 87.9 N in the northeast direction, and Jane pulls to the southeast with 185 N. (Since the donk involved with such uncoordinated people, who can blame it for being stubborn?) Find the magnitude the net force the people exert on the donkey What is the direction of the net force? Express this as the angle from the east direction between 0 with a positive sign for north of east and a negative sign for south of east and 90 PreviousCheck Answer Nextx 5 8 9Explanation / Answer
As given in the question,
Magnitude of force applied by Jack = 66.7 N (East)
Magnitude of force applied by Jill = 87.9 N (North east)
Magnitude of force applied by Jane = 185 N (South east)
So, to calculate net force, we have to first resolve the forces in east direction (x axis) and north direction (y axis)
F(east) = 66.7 + 87.9 cos(45) + 185 cos(45) = 259.67 N
F(north) = 87.9 sin(45) - 185 sin(45) = - 68.66 N
F(net) = [(259.67)2 + (-68.66)2]1/2 = 268.6 N
angle = tan-1( -68.66/ 259.67) = - 14.81°
