Question

Help with both if possible please...

A firefighter needs to adjust the valve on a fire hydrant to regulate the flow of water. She attaches a wrench to the bolt of the valve. How should she apply force to the wrench in order to get the most torque on the bolt? A. perpendicular to the length of the wrench far from the bolt B. perpendicular to the length of the wrench close to the bolt C. parallel to the length of the wrench far from the bolt D. parallel to the length of the wrench close to the bolt

Explanation / Answer

7. The option is A because we know that Torque is cross product of Force and Perpendicular distance from the point of application. So if we are far away from the source ,so Perpendicular distance increases and hence the torque.

8. The option is B because inertia depends on both mass and distance from the axis. So if the radius is increased the distance increases and since mass is constant for all the three wheels. Hence the order.
