I believe that one contributing factor to adult obesity would have to be the current economic state of the country. The amount of money one has to spend on food directly impacts the quality and quantity of food one consumes. For a young adult, who works to support him or herself, the attraction to purchase quick food options is great. Our society inspires a system where most of those who work full time are barely able to afford the cost of living. Prices for organic foods and produce seem to always be on the rise as well. When fast food companies can provide meals that satisfy hunger for less than $5 a meal, it makes it hard to the average person to say no.Another factor contributing adult obesity would be personal preference and food allergies. Our society has pushed for the development of fondness towards fast food. We are constantly bombarded with advertisements for new inexpensive combination meal options. The number of fast food establishments largely surpasses the number of fresh food markets in every city. Fast food companies pump their food items full of things that send pleasure impulses to the brain making it hard to not like what they have to offer.
We have also neglected to encourage and teach the youth how to garden, portion control and basic nutrition. Some states have no nutritional standards for foods and beverages that are provided to preschool-aged children in child care. This creates precedence for habits to be developed and carried into adulthood that will likely be passed on to the next generation out of ease and ignorance. Those habits can alter DNA that is passed on by boosting intolerances and/or allergies.
