Question

Explain which formula/defintion you are using and why you are using it. Explain the formulas meaning, too.

A horizontal beam of laser light of wavelength 585nm passes through a narrow slit that has width 0.0620mm. The intensity of the light is measured on a vertical screen that is 2.00m away, (a) What is the minimum uncertainty in the vertical component of the momentum of each photon in the beam after the photon has passed through the slit? (b) Estimate the width of the observed central diffraction maximum based on your answer to part (a).

Explanation / Answer

The condition for a dark fringe is sin = m/a.

Since sin < 1 for a screen,

we have m/a < 1 m < a/ = 105.98 = 106

(a) 212 dark fringes. They occur for m = ±1, ±2..., ±106.

(b) sin = 106/a = 113 x (0.585 µm)/(62.0 µm) = 1.00016

or, = +- 90 degree.
