Question
The shaft is supported at its ends by two bearings A and B and is subjected to the forces applied to the pulleys fixed to the shaft (Figure 1) The T_1 = 350-N forces act in the -z direction and the 200-N and 80-N forces act in the direction. The journal bearings at A and B exert only y and z components of force on the shaft. Determine the resultant normal force on the cross section at D. Express your answer to three significant figures and include appropriate units. Determine the resultant shear force in the y direction on the cross section at D. Express your answer to three significant figures and include appropriate units. Determine the resultant shear force in the z direction on the cross section at D. Express your answer to three significant figures and include appropriate units.Explanation / Answer
Part A : Since there is no axial load acting on the shaft, the resultant axial load at D=0
Part B : From moment equilibrium of shaft at support B,we get
RAy *1.4 -400*0.7 - 160*0.4 =0
RAy = 245.7 N(in negative y direction)
Internal shear force at D in y direction = 245.7-400=154.3 N
Part C :
From moment equilibrium of shaft at support B,we get
RAz *1.4 -700*1.1 =0
RAz = 550N(in positive z direction)
Internal shear force at D in z direction =550-700=150 N
