Question

Chapter 02, Problem 36 GO Your answer is partially correct. Try again. Two soccer players start from rest, 33 m apart. They run directly toward each other, both players accelerating. The first player's acceleration has a magnitude of 0.59 m/s2. The second player's acceleration has a magnitude of 0.43 m/s2. (a) How much time passes before the players collide? (b) At the instant they collide, how far has the first player run? (a) Number UnitsT s (b) Numbe UnitsT m Click if you would like to Show Work for this question:

Explanation / Answer

a)
since they are moving toward each other,
net acceleration, a = 0.59 + 0.43 = 1.02 m/s^2
d = 33 m
vi = 0 m/s
use:
d =vi*t + 0.5*a*t^2
33 = 0 + 0.5*1.02*t^2
33 = 0.5*1.02*t^2
t = 8.0 s
Answer: 8.0 s

b)
for 1st player:
a = 0.59 m/s^2
t = 0.59 m
vi = 0 m/s
d = vi*t + 0.5*a*t^2
d = 0 + 0.5*0.59*(8.0)^2
d = 19 m
Answer: 19 m
