Question

Chapter 02, Problem 51 Multiple-Concept Example 6 reviews the concepts that play a role in this problem. A diver springs upward with an initial speed of 2.11 m/s from a 3.0-m board. (a) Find the velocity with which he strikes the water. [Hint: When the diver reaches the water, his displacement is y3.0 m (measured from the board), assuming that the downward direction is chosen as the negative direction.] (b) What is the highest point he reaches above the water? (a) Number Units b) Number Units SHOW HINT LINK TO TEXT Question Attempts: 0 of 6 used SAVE FOR LATER SUBMIT ANSWE

Explanation / Answer

A)

Using relation, v^2 = u^2 +2 ah

Velocity, v = sqrt (2.11^2 + 2 (-9.8)(-3)) = - 7.95 m/s

B)

Position, y = - u^2/2a = - (2.11^2)/(-2 x 9.8) = 0.227 m

Position above the water is 3 + 0.227 = 3.227 m
