Question

8. Three blocks are connected to each other as shown·The mass of block A is mA 3kg and the mass of block B is mB = 4kg. The coefficient of kinetic friction between block A and the surface = 0.2. The coefficient of kinetic friction between block B and the surface 2-.15. The block C moves vertically down with a constant speed. The incline makes angle of 35° with the horizontal directin. Figure 0.4: Problem 8. i) Determine the tension in the string connecting blocks A and B. ii site (noro 163 te: tu no sKsOL ann lin @utlulg, confio xtitup: allux ks1 t C. iii) What is the mass of block C?

Explanation / Answer

i) Tension in string connecting A and B

Since speed is constant, force is balanced,

T1 = u1 mAg

= 0.2*3*9.8

= 5.88 N answer

B) Here also, Force is balanced,

Tension in right string T2

=T1 + mBg sin theta + u2*mBg cos theta

= 5.88 + 4*9.8*sin 35 degree + 0.15*4*9.8* cos 35 degree

= 33.18 N answer

C) Again force is balanced as speed is constant.

mCg = T2

mC = 33.18/9.8

= 3.386 kg answer
