Explain the role of the TCA cycle in respiratory metabolism.
TCA cycle is the second stage of the aerobic respiration during which acetyl group of acetyl-CoA is oxidised into two molecules of CO2 to produce coenzymes NADH and FADH2. These reduced equivalents are oxidized in electron transport chain to form ATPs.
Primary role of TCA is to generate ATPs and secondarily it provides intermediates for the biosynthesis of glucose, fatty acids and amino acids.
