Question
Explain how to do the following problems step-by-step.
1) It takes 93 seconds on average for you to swim a 50-m length pool. Swimming laps (i.g. down the 50-m pool and back), where would you expect to be after 110 seconds?
2) Two people measure the length of a cell phone a large number of times. Your friend gets a best estimate of 77.98±0.05mm. Your best estimate is 77.90±0.07mm. Are they the same within uncertainty?
3) In Einstein's famous equation E=mc2, m is mass and c is the speed of light. What are the units of E, both in base units and in one derived unit?
Explanation / Answer
Answer 1) In 93 sec, length of swimming pool covered is 50 m.
So, in 110 sec, length of swimming pool covered is (50 x 110)/93 m = 59.14 m.
So, after 110 sec, the swimmer is expected to be 9.14 m away from the opposite end of the pool or (50 - 9.14)m = 40.86 away from the starting point.
