Question

points Tipler 22 P.040 Consider two concentric conducting spheres. The outer sphere is hollow and initially has a charge Q1 =-BQ deposited on it. The inner sphere is solid and has a charge Q2 = +30 on it. My Notes Ak Your Teacher (a) How much charge is on the outer surface? How much charge is on the inner surface? (b) Suppose a wire is connected between the inner and outer spheres. Electrostatic equilibrium is established. How much charge is on the outer surface of the outside sphere? How much is on the inner surface? Q How, if at all, does the electric field at the surface of the inside sphere change when the wire is connected? O It does not change at all o It changes from a finite value to a lesser nonzero finite value. o It changes from a finite value to zero. O It changes from a finite value to a greater value. (c) Suppose we return to the original conditions in (a), with +3Q on the inner sphere and -8Q on the outer. We now connect the outer sphere to ground with a wire and then disconnect it. How much total charge wil be on the outer sphere? How much charge will be on the inner surface of the outer sphere? How much will be on the outer surface of this sphere?

Explanation / Answer

a. The electric field inside a hollow sphere must be zero. But here a solid sphere is present inside the hollow sphere so there will be electric field between surface of solid sphere and the inner surface of hollow sphere. since the solid sphere have +3Q charge so the inner surface must have also -3Q charge so that the net elecric field in only between solid sphere and inner surface of hollow sphere.

Outer suface = -5Q

Inner surface = -3Q.

b. If wire is connected between inner and outer sphere then the +3Q charge of the inner sphere will neutrallised with -3Q charge of the outer sphere.

Outer surface = -5Q

Inner surface =0Q

since there is no charge between solid sphere and inner surface so electric field will be zero. So option 3 is correct answer.

c. If outer surface will be grounded then the net charge on outer surface will be zero. But the charge on the hollow sphere will be -3Q which is confined on inner surface due to the +3Q charge on the solid sphere inside the hollow sphere.

Total charge = -3Q

Outer surface = 0Q

Inner surface = -3Q
