Explanation / Answer

a) We are looking for an average speed. The key word isaverage. That means that we do not care about differentspeeds, we just need to know how far he went and how long ittook. Since the kangaroo went 60m in 5s; we just use thosefinal results and divide. Looking at the units, we know weneed to divide the distance by the time. As such, we willarrive at an answer of 12m/s as the average speed. b) The only difference between speed and velocity is that speed isthe magnitude of velocity. In other words speed is just anumber while velocity is a number AND a direction. Therefore,the average velocity will be 12m/s to the east. Notice themagnitude is the same as the speed, but now we include the extrainformation given about the direction. c) This is kind of a trick question. The time after does notmatter. The velocity increases at 2.5 m/s at every second,whether it is 1 second later, 5 seconds later, or 10 seconds later;the information just says it keeps increasing. Therefore, theacceleration at 5s, or at any time for that matter, is simply2.5m/s^2. Notice the denominator has units of seconds squaredbecause the kangaroo increases its velocity at 2.5 meters persecond per second. Hope this helps, good luck!
