Question
A cowboy pulls on a mule with a force to give a speed of 23.1m/stoward the east and a cowgirl pulls with a force to give a speed of37.7m/s toward the north. Determine the direction of the mule, specifying the angle in degrees north of east. What does it mean north of east? Does east mean thex-axis??
To solve this I set up two vectors on pointed towards thenorth (y-axis) and one pointed towards the east (x-axis). But onebig part was throwing me off.....
When I try to find the components of the vector going northshould it be 37.7 m/s (vector component Y) and then 0m/s (vectorcomponent X)???? The vector is only going north so this seemedlogical to me.
After doing this I drew a triangle and found the angle bycalculating:
tan-1(23.1/37.7)=31.4971
should it of been tan-1(37.7/23.1)
I got the answer wrong somehow. HELP!

Explanation / Answer
What does it mean north of east? Does east mean thex-axis?? yes.
the direction= tan-1(37.7/23.1)=58.59degree .
so the resultant direction is 58.59 degree north of east.
