Question

Point P is midway between two long, straight, parallelwires that run east west in a horizontal plane. The distancebetween the wires is 1.0 cm. Each wirecarries a current of 1.1 A toward thewest. (a) Find the magnitude and direction of themagnetic field at point P.
T

(b) Repeat the question if the current in the wire on the southside runs toward the east instead.

Explanation / Answer

(a) the B field from each wire is .    B = k I / r = 2 x 10-7 * 1.1 /0.005 = 440 x 10-7 T . But in part (a) they are in opposite directions, so thetotal B field is  zero . (b) now they are in the same direction so... .      total B field = 440+ 440 =   880 x 10-7=    8.80 x10-5 Tesla      anddirection is UP
