I need help on questions 20 and 21, please. The answers I provided were insufficient for full credit, and I'm not sure why.
Exam 1, Spring 2017 orve Hoos Use the following information to answer questions 24-27. A team of scientists from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife was interested in re-establishing a rare plant Lithophragama hypothetica. in Northern California. Before large-scale reintroduction efforts, the scientists wanted to determine the ecological niche of this species to more efficiently target reintroduction sites. To this end, the scientists planted 100 individua Lithophragama hypothetica plants in 8 different sets of conditions/treatments in a greenhouse. The conditions were two different levels of watering day, two different levels of soil pH, and the presence or absence of another per same habitat, Heuchera artificialis. After plant species from the two years (two cycles of reproduction) they determined the number of Lithophragama hypothetica plants in each condition/treatment. Their data are summarized below water/day Soil pH Heuchera of Lithophragama artificialis present? hypothetica at end of experiment No 10ml 120 10ml 105 10ml 8 No 110 Sml Yes 95 Sml No 104 5ml Eyes 45 5 No 188, 20 3 points) Based upon the data above, which sets of conditions comprise the fundamental niche of Lithophragama hypothetica? Answer 20:
The question itself is just asking “which set of conditions comprises the fundamental niche for L. hypothetica”. Now by definition “fundamental niche is where a species lives in the absence of negative interspecific interactions (mostly competition, parasitism, etc).
As the question did not ask which the most efficient conditions is, in my opinion all the conditions where H. artificialis is absent comprises the fundamental niche for L. hypothetica (all four conditions where NO H.artificialis is present).
Answer 21:
Similar to answer 20, in my opinion all the conditions where H. artificialis is present comprises the realized niche for L. hypothetica (all four conditions where H.artificialis is present). As the realized niche is where species can grow in presence of a competitor. In the last three set of conditions (10mL water/pH8/YES; 5mL water/pH7/YES; 5mL water/pH8/YES) it shows that indeed H.artificialis is a competitor as L. hypothetica is growing less efficiently compared to when H.artificialis is absent.
PS: In case it is not enough, can you provide (or ask your teacher) more clarity on question.
