Question

What types of roots are found in large trees such as tall trees and what are their functions? Buttress roots form in several species of tropical trees (e.g. fig, right). These roots grow out from the base of the trunk sometimes as high as 9 meters above the ground. Considering the wet, nutrient-poor in the rainforest, what major function do you think these roots perform? Stems have tissues at the cellular level that arc important in structural support and the movement fluids throughout the plant. Like roots, stems are sometimes modified to serve as storage organ (cacti, potatoes), protection against herbivory (thorns), and vegetative reproduction (corm). Two examples of modified stems that serve in vegetative reproduction are rhizomes (horizontal stem grow below the soil's surface), and stolon's (horizontal stems that grow above the soil's surface rhizomes and stolon's have the capacity to produce new shoots and roots from their nodes. T end slender whip-like or thread-like strands specialized to anchor and support vining stems. tendril be modified leaves, leaflets, leaf tips, or leaf stipules; they may, however, be derived as modify stem branches (e.g., grapes).

Explanation / Answer

4]

In large tall tree taproot is present which is a large, central, and dominant root from which other roots sprout laterally. Taproot is straight and very thick, is tapering in shape, and grows directly downward. Some lateral roots branch out of the side of this taproot and grow horizontally through the upper layers of the soil. Near the tip of the finer roots are single cell root hairs. These are in immediate contact with the soil particles and can absorb water and nutrients.

Buttress roots are large erectile they are found in nutrient-poor rainforest soils and do not penetrate to deeper layers. They mainly prevent the tree from falling over hence the name buttress.
