2. Each codon is made of three nucleotides. Protein sequences are encoded in DNA by reading the series of codons in three possible ways:
Reading of three codon frames can start at different nucleotides reading the series (taking three codons at a time) in 3'-5' direction. OR Reading three codons in series in 5'-3' direction which can start at different nucleotides.
RNA polymerase transcripts the DNA in 3'-5' direction whereas mRNA is synthesized in 5'-3' direction.
3. The reading of codons can start in the given sequence in three ways from 3'-5' and in another three ways in 5' to 3' direction. Like,
(A) TCA GAT AAA AAA CTG GCA CGC AAT.......
(B) CAG ATA AAA AAC TGG CAC GCA ATC....
(C) AGA TAA AAA ACT GGC ACG CAA TCT GCA......
In third encoding, TAA is Stop codon so it can be predicted that the functional proteins coding has begun from 3' direction where there will be a START codon, ending the nucleotide sequence at TAA stop codon reading the series in 3'-5' direction.
