Question
An isolated conductor of arbitrary shape has a net charge of+7.7 x 10- 6 C. Inside the conductor is a cavity withinwhich is a point charge q = +3.9 x 10-6 C. InCoulombs, what is the charge (a) on the cavitywall and (b) on the outer surface of theconductor?Any help would be much appreciated! Explanation / Answer
(a) Electric field inside a conductor equals zero. So, if wehave Gaussian surface surrounding the cavity region within theconductor, the total charge enclosed must be zero.So the charge on the cavity wall = - 7.70×10-6C.
(b) The charge on the outer surface = 7.70×10-6C + 3.90×10-6C = 1.6 x 10-5 C
= 1.6 x 10-5 C
