Question

Hi,
I was wondering why the potential difference was negative for thefollowing problem: work done by external force to move a -8.5C charge from point a to point b is 15.0*10-4 J,charge was started from rest and had 4.82*10-4 J ofkinetic energy when it reached point b, find potential differencebetween a and b. Is the answer negative because the finalpotential difference is less than the initial potential difference? Also, is there a conceptual explanation to why the potentialdifference is negative? Thank you!

Explanation / Answer

Charge q = -8.5* 10 ^ -6 C

Work done W = 15 * 10 ^ -4 J

Initial velocity u = 0

Kinetic energy at point b is K = 4.82* 10 ^ -4 J
