Question
Chapter 9, Problem 13 A hiker, who weighs 603 N, is strolling through the woods andcrosses a small horizontal bridge. The bridge is uniform, weighs3220 N, and rests on two concrete supports, one on each end. Hestops 1/4 of the way along the bridge. What is the magnitude of theforce that a concrete support exerts on the bridge(a) at the near end and (b) atthe far end? What is the magnitude of theforce that a concrete support exerts on the bridge(a) at the near end and (b) atthe far end?Explanation / Answer
When the system is in equilibriumwe have= 0
So about far end we have
= (603) (3L/4) + (3220) (L/2) - (F) (L) = 0
==> Ffar = 452.25 + 1610 = 2062.25 N
For Fnear we have
603 +3220 = Fnear + 2062.25
==> Fnear = 1760.75 N
