Motivating employees is a challenging task for managers in any organization. Recent researches and works have given new insights to how we can motivate people to achieve their objectives. Rewards and incentives are one of the key factors to motivate and push individuals to give their best efforts to achieve targets. Step by step rewards is obe technique where the amount of reward depends on how good a task is performed. These motivate people to give their best at any task.

However, incentives do not actually work for tasks that involve higher cognitive abilities. For simple, straighforward tasks, rewards are a great way of motivation but rewards do not work for tasks that involve much higher cognitive skills. People should be paid well enough so that they are not thinking about money and only focusing on work. Apart from that there are 3 other factors - autonomy, mastery and purpose. Autonomy refers to doing things that an individual likes to do and this can bring out results that would not be possible otherwise. Mastery is the urge to get better at doing stuffs. The feeling of contributing gives a purpose. People become motivated when they have challenges that they can overcome to achieve mastery and when they feel that their work is contributing towards something significantly.
