the pateint return today for his lab follow up. you inform the pateint that he is HIV postive. the patient asks you not to tell his current partner who happens to be one of your patients.

.what do you do? explain your reasons for making this decision.

please no hand writing. thank you

Explanation / Answer

1. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, which is the widely used test for HIV.

2. If the test is negative, it is possible that the patient has not yet developed enough anitibodies for the virus, or the virus hasn't multiplied enough to produce a signal. At this point, an RNA test can be used. These tests show the presence of the virus within 10-14 days of infection, however it is more expensive.

3. The patient will be advised to donate blood, take any form of drugs with other people and avoid unprotected sexual contact with other people.

4. I'll not inform the partner of the disease, however I'll try to convince the partner to have protected sex henceforth.
