Question
During a process described by the photoelectric effect, ultraviolet light can be used to charge a piece of metal. (a)If Such light is incident on a slab of conducting material and electrons are ejected with enough energy that they escape the surface of the metal, how long before the metal has a net charge of +1.50nC if 1.00 x 10^6 electrons are ejected per second? (b) If 1.3 eV is needed to eject an electron from the surface, what is the power rating of the light beam?I honestly thought I would solve this problem with differential calculus, I'm not sure though.
Explanation / Answer
a) 1.50 x 10-9C/(106 x 1.6x10-19C/s) =9.375 x 103 s b) P=Work done/time = 106 x 1.3 eV/s =106 x 1.3eV x 1.602 x 10-19J/eV(1/s) =2.0826 x 10-13 J/s (= 2.0826 x 10-13Watt)
