Question
When you suddenly stand up after lying down for a while, your body may not compensate quickly enough for the pressure changes and you might feel dizzy for a moment.(a) If the gauge pressure of the blood at your heart is 12.98 kPa and your body doesn't compensate, what would the pressure be at your head, 41.5 cm above your heart?
(b) If the gauge pressure of the blood at your heart is 12.98 kPa and your body doesn't compensate, what would it be at your feet, 1.30x10^2 cm below your heart? Hint: The density of blood is 1060 kg/m^3.
Please answer in kPa and in detail.
Explanation / Answer
SOlution:
Pressure = Density x gravity x height difference
= 1060 X 9.8 X 0.415 = 4315.419 Pa = 4.315 kPa
Prssure drop = Po-P = 12.98 - 4.315 = 8.665 kPa = 8.7 kPa
b) Pressure at the feet = 12.98 + [(1060 x 9.8 x 1.3) x10^-3 ] kPa
= 26.5 kPa.
