Question

This is a really important question, its for my final exam so i would appreciate accuracy !!

7. A 40-kg block of ice at - 0.1 °C is sliding on a horizontal surface. The initial speed of the ice is
25 m/s and the final speed is zero m/s. Assume that the part of the block that melts has a very
small mass and that all the heat generated by kinetic friction goes into the block of ice causing it
to melt. Determine the mass of ice that melts into water at 0 °C. The latent heat of fusion of water
is 33.5x104 J/kg. Use 2000 J/(kg Co) for specific heat capacity of ice.

Explanation / Answer

total kinetic energy. 40*25^2/2=12500(J). ---- let m be the melted ice mass. 12500=m*2000*0.1+m*33.5e4. so that m=0.0373(kg)
