Question
This is a real change management problem based on recent events....Congratulations - you get to be the President of UAB and are responsible for rolling out a dramatic change to the institution - eliminating football!
DO NOT complain about how it was actually done.
1. Write out the 8 step change model. Review the event (memory, press releases, news articles etc.). Did the leader take actions in each of the change steps that were visible to help facilitate change?
2. Think about the different stakeholders who resisted the change: students, faculty, staff, athletes, community, alumni etc. Did they support or resist the change, and in what form of resistance: I don't get it, I don't like it, I don't like you. What could have been done to overcome their resistance? This is a real change management problem based on recent events....

Explanation / Answer
8 step change model
Step-1 - Create Urgency
For making a change as a leader you should create an urgency for change so that the whole organization should sense the need for change immediately. This should be a convincing and honest dialogue among everyone so that everyone can debate about the need of change and agree to it. As a president of UAB you have to show an honest cause why football should be banned in the institution such as it is improving the violence in the institution>you can show the dramatic increase of violent activities around the institute by football players. Also, you can show how it is affecting body and brain of players due to high physical activities. You should give the opportunity to everyone to discuss so that a need for change will be created.
Step 2 - Form a Powerful Coalition
As a leader to adopt a change you have to take a team along with you. You should consider building a team from each and every department and identify the true leaders who can convince a group of people to walk towards the change. You should take senior professors and other faculty members and also some administrative staffs in your team who can influence students and other staffs for thinking about the change you are going to implement. Ensure to have a good mix of people.
Step 3 - Create a vision for change
When you first start thinking about change, there will probably be many great ideas and solutions floating around. Link these concepts to an overall vision that people can grasp easily and remember. The vision should be clear to the people. People should follow your vision and talk about it
Step 4 - Communicate the vision
As a leader, you should follow the vision by yourself first as your personality and activity matter a lot as people in the organization follow you. As a president of an educational institute, you should follow certain rules to communicate the vision to your people. You can display the benefits of adopting the change across the institute. You can show your vision statements in classes and benefits of not playing a football game and rather play a different game.
Step 5 - Remove Obstacles
As a change is going to happen many people will resist the change and as a leader, you should have the capability to handle thoseYou should hire people who can make the change to happen and convince people. You can reward certain people to influence them and change their views towards your decision. When you are at an educational institute you will not only get resistance from inside but also from outside too. You also need to handle the alumni and the board members. You have to take quick actions to remove the barriers.
Step 6 - Create short-term wins
To motivate everyone you should show success to people. You should set small targets which you can achieve easily. This will convince your people. As a president, you can take up small and rapid projects to ensure that you can achieve them without much help. You can take up a project of organizing other extracurricular activities and ask students and staffs to take part which can be a greater success and people can change their focus from football.
Step 7- Build the change
Sometimes project fails because victory declared early. Only getting success is not a big thing, adopting it throughout the life is a big thing. Analyzing the success and failure after every result is good. For getting a change as a leader in institute you should build events and analyze the lacunas in it so that those can be helpful for a greater change.
Step 8 - Anchor the Changes in Corporate Culture
After the change is adopted you should make it part of a corporate culture. You should show the success and discuss the change frequently. You should include the change module in hiring process of new staffs. It will make your change succesful.
