Question

A car owner forgets to turn off the headlights of his car while it is parked in his garage. If the 12.61 V battery in his car is rated at 70 A · h and each headlight requires 24 W of power, how long will it take the battery to completely discharge in hours?

Explanation / Answer

This one is fairly simple. First of all one must gather how many amps is drawn from 2 headlights with a potential of 12.61 volts drawing 24 watts a piece. We know that P (watts) = V * I To solve for I we get I = P/V -> I = 2*(24/12.61) (note the 2 is for 2 headlights) I = 3.807 amps Now that we know the total current of the circuit, we can solve for Battery Life which will be the 70 Ah divded by the number of amps 70Ah/3.807 amps = 18.39 hours Hope this helps
