Question
The toe bearing capacity in piles is similar to the ultimate bearing capacity of spread footings. However, the side friction capacity has no equivalent in spread footing design. Why can we ignore the friction acting on the side of spread footings but not in piles?
3. The toe bearing capacity in piles is similar to the ultimate bearing capacity of spread footings. However, the side friction capacity has no equivalent in spread footing design. Why can we ignore the friction acting on the side of spread footings but not in piles?Explanation / Answer
in spread footing we are lying the footing in horizontal direction mostly. but in the pile we have to provide the piles for longer depths in vertically, for this friction creates more effect on piles, for this reason we are considering friction into the consideration in the pile foundations. where as in spread footing friction effect causing is very negligible amount , that is reason why we are neglecting the friction in spread footings.
